Overview
The
sport of triathlon
is an incredibly exciting and seductive personal challenge. The
extraordinary levels of drive and motivation required to achieve
peak performance can often become the triathlete’s worst
enemy. In our highly competitive modern world, it’s easy
to get ‘caught up’ in a rat race mentality, where
you measure and judge your happiness and self-worth by superficial
results. With this flawed mentality you can easily cross the line
into an obsessive approach that often results in burnout and declining
performance.
Breakthrough
Triathlon Training offers a better way. This revolutionary
work is the first ‘how-to’ book to offer a holistic
approach to peak performance in triathlon. The three distinct
sections of the book help you adopt a healthy attitude and perspective,
rejecting the influence of the rat race; implement intuitive training
techniques that harmonize mind and body and eliminate ego, insecurity,
peer pressure and other external influences; and finally delve
into the mindset of the elite athlete to understand and adopt
a champion’s approach to peak performance.
The
book is easy to follow and packed with anecdotes and insights
from the greatest endurance athletes in the world – including
a thoughtful Foreword and extensive commentary from Tour de France
legend Lance Armstrong.
Kearns’
deep insights and constant sense of humor take you on an entertaining
journey of enlightenment that will transform your approach to
the sport and open the door for performances beyond your wildest
dreams.
Content
Outline
Breakthrough Triathlon Training will have three distinct sections.
The first section, “Attitude and Philosophy”
will discuss the power of cultivating a pure motivation
and a healthy, balanced approach to the sport. Kearns will share
stories from his personal experience as a top professional triathlete,
anecdotes from top endurance athletes and practical steps to break
free of the obsessive/compulsive approach that is so common among
amateur triathletes.
The
second section, “Training Principles and Strategy”,
will discuss actual training methods and strategies – aerobic
base building, periodization, heart rate guidelines and the guiding
principle of stress and rest for improvement. Other sections will
dispel common triathlon myths about speed work, strength training,
acclimatization and training for the challenge of swimming.
The
third section, “Developing the Mind of a Champion”
will discuss the mental and psychological factors that
generate peak performance and distinguish the champion athletes
from those at a lower level. Extensive, never-before-published
commentary from a 1:1 interview with Lance Armstrong will bolster
the theories presented about how to develop the mentality of a
champion.
Kearns
will uncover the mysterious shroud that surrounds the concept
of being "in the zone" as an athlete, where peak performance
is natural and effortless. Explaining and quantifying these "zone"
factors will help the reader develop the skills and the mindset
to enter the Zone at will and avoid the mistakes that often hinder
one's best efforts at peak performance.
Collectively,
the book gives a triathlete all the tools he needs to go beyond
the mere mechanics of how to train and race (the focus of nearly
all triathlon books) into an integrative and holistic approach
to the sport. This "Breakthrough" will enable athletes
to effectively balance the pursuit of triathlon goals with a happy,
healthy, busy lifestyle off the race course.
